Glassdoor releases its annual list and 7 of top 10 are digital companies
The unemployment rate has hit a five-year low,
and employers are steadily adding around 200,000 jobs a month. Of
course, problems persist in the labor market. But with signs of
improvement, many job seekers may feel the time is right to shoot for
the stars and try to land a job with their dream employer.
So which are the best? The employment website Glassdoor has just released its annual list of the best places to work for 2014. The list is based on more than half a million reviews submitted by workers to Glassdoor over the last year. The results are divided into two lists -- most popular employers with more than 1,000 workers and another list for smaller firms with at least 250 workers.
Workers are asked to rate their general satisfaction, as well as opportunities for growth, compensation and the benefits offered by their company. The workers are also asked if they would recommend their workplace to a friend and how they view the company's business outlook. The results are then used to compute a rating ranging from one to five.
Are there any larger trends from the results? The majority of the highest-rated employers from both lists are tech companies, with the hottest brands powering the digital revolution ranking near the top. In fact, seven of the ten employers on the main best places to work list are digital companies.

And according to Scott Dobroski, Glassdoor's community expert, one
common policy shared by many of the most popular companies is a
rejection of top-down hierarchy. "One of Twitter's core principles is
'fearless communication,' which means senior leaders must be open to
discussions with all workers," Dobroski told AOL Jobs in an interview.
"This of course makes sense at Twitter, where anyone can tweet at
anyone. And it sounds so simple, but one-way communication from the
bosses on down is the norm at most companies."
Twitter, as it turns out, is the highest-performing of the companies -- appearing on the list for the first-time. But American standard-bearers like Disney made their debut on the list, now in its sixth year of being published. (Disney registered as number 42.)

Life, of course, is far from perfect at even the most the most famous and highly-ranked companies.
As Business Insider has reported, the male dominated Google has been
criticized for promoting a culture of "arrogance," according to reviews
submitted to Quora. "Everybody believes he is better than his neighbor.
So it is really hard to discuss any issue unless it is your friend you
are talking to," one unnamed employee wrote on a recent Quora thread.
Google was also slammed for not letting employees work remotely, cramped
office spaces and being so large it's easy to feel lost.
Google, however, is still Google, and appears on the list. See below for the top ten from each list.
